BEIRUT, November 22. /TASS/. The militant wing of the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah is ready to observe a humanitarian pause within the framework of the agreements reached between Israel and the Palestinian movement Hamas, the Al Jazeera TV channel reported, citing a source in the organization.
"Hezbollah will respect the announced ceasefire if the Israeli occupation forces abide by it," the source said. "South Lebanon is the front supporting the Gaza Strip, and if the fighting stops there, it will retreat to [deep] Lebanon," he added.
According to Al Jazeera's source, any escalation in Gaza or southern Lebanon during the humanitarian pause in the Palestinian enclave "will be met with a response from Hezbollah." The source added that the Lebanese movement is not involved in the negotiations between Israel and Hamas on a prisoner swap and the implementation of a ceasefire in Gaza.
Situation in Gaza
Tensions flared up again in the Middle East on October 7 when Hamas militants staged a surprise attack on Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip, killing residents of Israeli border settlements and taking over 200 hostages, including women, children and the elderly. Hamas described its attack as a response to the aggressive actions of Israeli authorities against the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem’s Old City. Israel has announced a total blockade of the Gaza Strip and has been delivering air strikes on Gaza as well as some parts of Lebanon and Syria. Clashes are also underway in the West Bank.
