Egypt proposes setting up refugee camps in Rafah in southern Gaza Strip — newspaper

The Egyptian authorities reportedly plan to provide emergency assistance to the displaced persons arriving at the camps from the northern part of Gaza

DUBAI, October 23. /TASS/. Egypt has proposed establishing camps for refugees from the northern part of the Gaza Strip in the Palestinian city of Rafah in southern Gaza, the Al-Araby Al-Jadeed newspaper reports, citing sources.

According to the sources, under the plan Cairo would control the camps, which would be located three kilometers from the Egyptian border.

The Egyptian authorities plan to provide emergency assistance to the displaced persons arriving at the camps from the northern part of Gaza because they are categorically opposed to the idea of sending Gaza refugees to the Sinai Peninsula, which is under Egyptian jurisdiction. Meanwhile, the sources point out, refugees in serious condition would be transferred to Egyptian hospitals for medical treatment.

Cairo has not made any official comments on the matter yet.

Another source told the paper that Egypt, Qatar and the US were coordinating their efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to Palestine through the Egyptian city of El-Arish and the Rafah Crossing Point. According to an existing agreement, there are plans to send 100 trucks with humanitarian aid to the enclave by the end of the week or by the beginning of next week. However, according to the source, the Israelis do not agree that Washington, Doha and Cairo should be allowed to coordinate their efforts, which may delay aid deliveries.
