CAIRO, April 9. /TASS/. Presidents Bashar Assad of Syria and Ebrahim Raisi of Iran have condemned Israel’s actions around Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa mosque, the Syrian president’s office said on Sunday after their telephone conversation.
"Assad and Raisi stressed that these attacks reflect Israel’s aggressive policy and are seen as the continuation of its aggression against Syria and civilians, proving its weakness and impotence in the face of the Palestinian people’s resistance and courage," it said.
The presidents reaffirmed that "stability in the region rests on the healthy relations between its countries rooted in dialogue, respect to the sovereignty and promoting common interests," it said. "The presidents think that the unipolar world order is becoming a thing of the past thanks to the vigilance of the peoples and countries who are defending their sovereignty and dignity."
The Palestinian-Israeli conflict began to escalate in recent days after incidents involving Palestinians and Israeli police officers on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem amid the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
The WAFA Palestinian News Agency reported on Tuesday that Israeli law enforcement officers had broken into the Al-Aqsa Mosque and used flash bang grenades, tear gas, rubber bullets and batons. According to the Lebanese Al Mayadeen television channel, more than 400 people were detained. The Israeli police said on Wednesday that dozens of young men in masks had barricaded themselves in the Temple complex, chanting slogans and calling for riots. The police had to intervene.
