China, EU should focus on economic cooperation — Xi Jinping

According to the Chinese leader, Beijing has always viewed the EU as a strategic force on the international stage and has seen developing relations with Europe as a priority for Chinese diplomacy

BEIJING, April 6. /TASS/. China and the European Union should concentrate on economic cooperation, Chinese leader Xi Jinping said in a conversation with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Thursday.

"China and the EU should focus on cooperation, mutual benefits and results," China Central Television quoted Xi as saying. "[The sides] should support economic globalization and the liberalization of trade, and conduct an in-depth dialogue on the issues of economic and trade cooperation, as well as reach agreements, acceptable to both sides, by means of holding talks," he said.

According to the Chinese leader, Beijing has always viewed the EU as a strategic force on the international stage and has seen developing relations with Europe as a priority for Chinese diplomacy. Xi noted that Beijing is a critical partner for the EU in resolving energy-and inflation-related issues, in addition to which China helps facilitate a heightened level of competitiveness for the EU. He expressed hope that the EU would concentrate on Europe’s fundamental and long-term interests in its relationship with China.

Von der Leyen and French President Emmanuel Macron are visiting China from April 5 to 7.
