Moldovan government accuses Chisinau protesters of destabilizing situation in country

Adriana Vlas said the politician, who lives abroad now, had been convicted of stealing a billion from the country’s banks

CHISINAU, February 28. /TASS/. Moldova’s ruling Party of Action and Solidarity has called the recent rally in Chisinau, where protesters demanded President Maia Sandu and her government to step down, an attempt to "destabilize the situation in the country," according to the Newsmaker publication.

Adriana Vlas, the party’s spokeswoman, said the protest was backed by Ilan Shor, the leader of the opposition party Shor, according to the report.

"These are moves to destabilize the situation in the country. Shor has taken the path of manipulations to try to use people’s vulnerability in order to evade justice," Vlas was quoted as saying by the Newsmaker.

She said the politician, who lives abroad now, had been convicted of stealing a billion from the country’s banks.

The Movement for the People has staged an anti-government rally in the center of Chisinau, which went down peacefully, despite opposition from the government and the police that blocked entry to Chisinau and the city center. The protesters demanded President Maia Sandu and the cabinet formed by the ruling party to step down and called for an early election. They accused the government of failing to tame rising prices, inflation that is the fastest over the past 20 years, reaching 30% in 2022, and attempts to push the country into the conflict in Ukraine.
