WARSAW, February 14. /TASS/. Three Russian warplanes escorted by Dutch F-35 fighters near Poland on Monday did not violate any country's airspace, Poland’s Defense Ministry told Polish television on Tuesday.

The Polish Defense Ministry confirmed that "Dutch F-35s stationed at the 22nd tactical aviation base in Malbork were scrambled on Monday, February 13, in order to identify and intercept three Russian aircraft that were close to Polish airspace."

"The planes were flying over international waters, the airspace of any country was not violated," Polish TV quoted the Defense Ministry as saying.

"The operation was carried out as part of NATO's Enhanced Air Policing mission, which monitors the eastern flank of the alliance," the Polish Defense Ministry said.

As the Trouw newspaper reported earlier on Tuesday, citing the Dutch Defense Ministry, two Dutch F-35s escorted three Russian military aircraft. It was the first such sortie since the start of the Netherlands’ mission, the newspaper added.

Poland hosts eight Dutch F-35 fighters in February and March. Four fighter jets are used to patrol NATO airspace over Eastern Europe. Another four aircraft are involved in a training program carried out jointly with NATO partners.
