Ukrainian foreign minister says Zelensky, Xi Jinping hadn’t spoken since operation started

Dmitry Kuleba conceded that "substantial dialogue" had been delegated to the ministers since the start of the military operation

LONDON, February 3. /TASS/. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky hasn’t spoken by phone with Chinese President Xi Jinping since Russian special military operation started last February, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said in an interview with BBC that was released on Friday.

"Regarding Chinese President Xi Jinping, the leaders exchanged correspondence. By the way, Xi Jinping was the first world leader that sent an official letter, that’s a special diplomatic practice, to congratulate the president on his birthday (January 25 - TASS). Diplomatic gestures like this do happen between the leaders," Kuleba said.

He conceded that "substantial dialogue" had been delegated to the ministers since the start of the military operation.

"There have been phone conversations and there were face-to-face meetings," Kuleba said.

When asked how Kiev feels about China’s policy about the conflict, the minister said, "If we put together a chart that will show what benefited our interests and what didn’t, then the number of points will be equal on each side. There have been drawbacks, but there have also been positive developments. Of course, we are working to get China’s position to drift toward a more pro-Ukrainian side."
