BERLIN, January 29. /TASS/. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has vowed to prevent escalation between Russia and NATO, noting that all members of the German government share this view.
"No NATO country directly participates in this war. None will do it," he said in an interview with Der Tagesspiegel daily published on Sunday. "German Chancellor that has taken an oath and cares about it, should do everything to prevent Russia’s war against Ukraine turning into a war between Russia and NATO," Scholz pointed out.
He "will thwart such escalation," the Germany chancellor said, adding that all members of the country’s government shared this view. "Foreign Minister [Annalena Baerbock] feels that way as well," he added.
Thus, Scholz commented on the foreign minister’s recent phrase that European countries "were waging a war Russia, not against each other." In this form she suggested controversy be avoided among Western countries on the issue of arms supplies to Kiev. A representative of the German foreign ministry noted later that the minister only wanted to stress the cohesion of the West in the issue of supporting Ukraine, emphasizing that the phrase was pronounced during a long discussion in English.
The German government has repeatedly said after that that the country was not a party to the military conflict in Ukraine.
