Hungary is not the only country opposing Russian gas price cap — Prime Minister

There was a short video from Brussels, noting that "mandatory common purchases of energy carriers and a pan-European gas price cap are contrary to Hungary's interests"

BUDAPEST, October 20. /TASS/. Hungary is not the only country opposing the proposal of the European Commission to set a price cap on Russian gas and to introduce a pan-European mechanism for gas purchases, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Thursday. He is taking part in the European Union (EU) summit in Brussels.

"The EU summit is underway. The Brussels proposals contrast sharply with the national interests of Hungary. Fortunately, we are not alone," the head of the Hungarian government wrote on his Facebook page (banned in Russia, owned by the Meta corporation, which is considered extremist in Russia). Orban expressed hope that at the summit in Brussels it would be possible to defend the interests of his country.

He also posted a short video from Brussels, noting that "mandatory common purchases of energy carriers and a pan-European gas price cap are contrary to Hungary's interests."

"In this case, the contracts underlying gas supplies to Hungary will be canceled and Hungary will be left without energy supply," the Prime Minister explained.

"However, there are others who think the same way as we do," he stressed.

"Therefore, I see a good chance that we will be able to defend the Hungarian national interests," Orban said during a break in the meeting of EU leaders, which will last until Friday.
