Ukrainian presidential spokesman confirms preparations for Istanbul talks on grain exports

The Milliyet newspaper reported earlier, citing sources in the Turkish presidential office, that talks on Ukrainian grain exports might take place next week

KIEV, June 21. /TASS/. Preparations for an Istanbul meeting on Ukrainian grain exports are underway but the talks won’t be held at the highest level, Ukrainian presidential spokesman Sergey Nikiforov said on Tuesday.

"I can confirm that preparations for such talks are underway. However, I would not consider it a fait accompli. The only thing that I can say is that the talks won’t be held at the highest level," he told Ukraine’s Strana media outlet.

The Milliyet newspaper reported earlier, citing sources in the Turkish presidential office, that talks on Ukrainian grain exports might take place next week. According to the paper, the meeting may involve United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The issue of Ukrainian grain exports was discussed at a meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu in Ankara on June 8. The Turkish authorities, in turn, said that they could provide security guarantees in terms of Ukrainian grain exports via the Black Sea. TRT reported last week, citing sources in the Turkish presidential administration, that a mechanism to implement a roadmap for Ukrainian grain exports could be launched shortly. The issue is expected to be discussed at an Istanbul meeting that will involve representatives of Russia, Turkey, Ukraine and the United Nations.
