Russia, US as nuclear powers must find ways of peaceful coexistence — Foreign Ministry

The two countries as nuclear superpowers bear special responsibility for the fate of the world, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova pointed out

ST. PETERSBURG, June 15. /TASS/. Russia and the United States, as two nuclear powers, must achieve the best forms of peaceful coexistence in the interests of the whole of humanity Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told a news briefing on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) on Wednesday.

"Russia and the United States, as nuclear superpowers bearing special responsibility for the fate of the world, must find an opportunity and optimal ways of peaceful coexistence in the interests of the whole of humanity," she said.

Zakharova stressed that the responsibility of nuclear powers implied not so much the possession of weapons as prevention of a global catastrophe. The main question now, she said, is "how soon Washington will be ready to reconcile itself with the new geopolitical realities and to say goodbye to claims to American exceptionalism ambitions, hegemony, and imperialism."

"This is a painful process, but an inevitable one," she stressed.
