Russia, Turkey highlight need to ensure security in Black Sea, says Lavrov

Security in the Black Sea must be ensured in line with the Montreux Convention, the Russian Foreign Minister noted

ANKARA, June 8. /TASS/. Russia and Turkey stressed the need to continue ensuring security in the Black Sea, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told a news conference on Wednesday after talks with his Turkish counterpart.

"We highlighted the need to maintain our approach to ensuring security in the Black Sea in line with the Montreux Convention [regulating maritime traffic through the Black Sea], which has contributed to stability there," Lavrov said, adding that Moscow appreciated Turkey’s role in the efforts.

Russia’s top diplomat noted that he and Turkey’s Mevlut Cavusoglu also discussed the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC), saying the two sides had a common interest in having the BSEC operating effectively without being politicized artificially.
