IAEA thinks that North Korea may be preparing for nuclear test

According to Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi, the conduct of a nuclear test would contravene UN Security Council resolutions and would cause serious concern

VIENNA, June 6. /TASS/. North Korea may be getting ready to conduct a nuclear test at a site in Punggye-ri, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi said at a meeting of its Board of Governors on Monday.

"At the Nuclear Test Site at Punggye-ri we have observed indications that one of the adits has been reopened, possibly in preparation for a nuclear test," his statement said.

According to Grossi, the conduct of a nuclear test would contravene UN Security Council resolutions and would cause serious concern.

He also noted that activity continues at the Yongbyon site with indications "consistent with the operation of the 5MW(e) reactor." The official said that the continuation of North Korea’s nuclear program is a clear violation of relevant UN Security Council resolutions and urged Pyongyang to fully comply with its obligations by restoring cooperation with the IAEA.
