De facto full lockdown enacted in Pyongyang over fever outbreak — Russian Embassy

Some 2.8 million people, or about 11% of the population, have been reported ill with fever in North Korea since May 22

MOSCOW, May 23. /TASS/. A de facto complete lockdown has been enforced in North Korea’s capital over spreading coronavirus cases, as only essential services are working, Russia’s Embassy in Pyongyang told TASS on Monday.

"The restrictions, imposed on May 10, remain extremely severe, especially in Pyongyang, where the caseload is higher than the country’s average," the Embassy said. "A de facto complete lockdown has been in place here."

Some 2.8 million people, or about 11% of the population, have been reported ill with fever in North Korea since May 22, the Embassy said, adding that it was not clear how many of the fever cases had been caused by coronavirus infections. The country has reported 68 deaths over this period.

The official Korean Central News Agency first confirmed the country’s Covid cases on May 12. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un ordered lockdowns in all cities and regions.
