Hungary hopes Finland, Sweden will agree with Turkey about NATO membership — MFA

Without Turkish consent, they will not be able to join, Peter Szijjarto said

NEW YORK, May 21 /TASS/. Hungary is hoping that Finland and Sweden will be able to agree with Turkey about their accession to NATO, Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on Fox News on Friday.

"Without Turkish consent, they will not be able to join, so I hope their discussion with Turkey will be successful," he said. "Turkey is one of the most important member states of NATO, one of the biggest army in NATO, one of the strongest army in NATO, a big and important country, so their concerns have to be taken into consideration seriously by the Finnish and the Swedish."

The ambassadors of Finland and Sweden to NATO on Wednesday officially delivered to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg the applications for their countries to join NATO. Russian President Vladimir Putin on May 16 at the summit of the Collective Security Treaty Organization in the Kremlin warned Moscow will have a response to an expansion of NATO's military infrastructure in Finland and Sweden. The Russian leader also said that the expansion of NATO to Finland and Sweden doesn’t pose a direct threat to the Russia because Moscow has no problems with these countries.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on May 18 said that Ankara won’t support the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO until they decide on their relations with terrorist organizations such as the Kurdistan Workers' Party, which Turkey believes is a terrorist group. He made a similar statement on May 16 that he was opposed to the entry of Finland and Sweden into NATO as these countries refused to extradite persons involved in the activities of the Kurdistan Workers' Party. He then also advised representatives of the Scandinavian countries not to bother themselves with traveling to Ankara.
