Germany may experience shortage of truck drivers due to Ukrainian crisis

Dirk Engelhardt recalled that in 2021 Ukrainians accounted for 7% of truck drivers on the German roads

BERLIN, April 24. /TASS/. Germany’s transport and logistic industry may experience a shortage of truck drivers due to the current hostilities in Ukraine, the board chairman of the Federal Union of Freight Transport and Logistics (BGL), Dirk Engelhardt, told the editorial group RND in an interview, published on Sunday.

He recalled that in 2021 Ukrainians accounted for 7% of truck drivers on the German roads.

"Amid Europe’s general shortage of truck drivers finding substitutes for them might be really hard," Engelhardt said. He did not rule out problems with delivering goods to retailers.

Also, he mentioned fuel price hikes as another aggravating factor.

"In the light of the exodus of liquidity the German transport and logistics industry may have to brace for a string of bankruptcies," he warned.
