Over half of Poles believe their country should have nuclear weapons — poll

The survey revealed that 52.9% of Polish people supported stationing nuclear weapons in Poland, while 27.9% of respondents opposed that idea and 19.2% of the respondents found it difficult to answer

MOSCOW, February 21. /TASS/. More than 50% of Polish people advocate their country having nuclear weapons, a survey conducted by the research center UCE Research showed.

The online study for the internet portal Onet.pl was carried out between February 19-20, covering a total of 1,025 respondents aged 18 and older. The poll revealed that 52.9% of Polish people supported stationing nuclear weapons in Poland, while 27.9% of respondents opposed that idea and 19.2% of the respondents found it difficult to answer.

In recent years, Polish President Andrzej Duda has repeatedly stated that his country was ready to host NATO members’ nuclear weapons under the alliance's nuclear-sharing policy if necessary. Today's Polish government, in turn, responded to Duda's statements emphasizing that the issue of Poland deploying nuclear weapons from the North Atlantic Alliance on its territory was not on the agenda. Similar reassurances were also received from NATO and Washington. Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the US nuclear weapons, if deployed on Polish territory, would immediately attract the attention of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia and would be taken into account in Russia's military planning.

NATO’s nuclear sharing is the sharing of the Alliance’s nuclear deterrence mission, which allows non-nuclear-weapon member countries to deploy it on their territory and participate in drills related to this sphere.
