Russia seeks extradition of Krasnoyarsk governor’s son detained in Italy at US request

MOSCOW, October 28. /TASS/. Russian law enforcement agencies will seek the extradition of the son of the Krasnoyarsk Region Governor Artem Uss, detained in Italy at the US’ request, law enforcement agencies told TASS on Friday.

"As part of the investigation into the money laundering case involving the arrested in absentia Artem Uss, a request for his extradition will be sent to Italy in order to prosecute him on the territory of the Russian Federation," the source said.

It was earlier reported that Moscow’s Meshchansky Court sanctioned the arrest in absentia of the son of the governor of the Krasnoyarsk Region, Artem Uss, based on a criminal case of large-scale money laundering.

"A measure of restraint in the form of arrest in absentia has been chosen with regard to Artem Aleksandrovich Uss," a court spokeswoman said. According to her, Uss is accused of committing a crime under paragraphs ‘a’ and ‘b’ of part 2 of Article 174 of the Russian Criminal Code (legalization (laundering) of money or other property acquired by other persons through criminal means within an organized group on a large scale). The article provides for a maximum penalty of up to 7 years imprisonment with a fine of 1 million rubles.

According to a TASS source in law enforcement agencies, Uss was put on a wanted list.

Earlier, it was revealed that the US authorities filed charges of evading sanctions and money laundering against five Russian citizens. According to the statement of the US Department of Justice, under a 12-count indictment, charges were filed against Russia’s Yury Orekhov, Artem Uss, Svetlana Kuzurgasheva, Timofey Telegin and Sergey Tulyakov, as well as Venezuelan citizens. According to the New York State Prosecutor's Office, the defendants were involved in "orchestrating a complex scheme to unlawfully obtain US military technology and Venezuelan sanctioned oil." Uss was detained in Italy on October 17 at the request of the United States. They are preparing for his extradition to the US. If convicted, the defendants are to face up to 30 years in prison.
