STOCKHOLM, April 4. /TASS/. Stockholm’s street naming committee thinks it inexpedient to rename the Stockholm street where Russia's embassy is located after the Ukrainian president, TV4 reported on Monday.
Following the Russian special military operation in Ukraine, a campaign was staged in Stockholm to rename Gjorwellsgatan, where the Russian embassy is situated, to Zelenskyjgatan. The commission’s chair, Olle Zetterberg, has called for being cautious on issues of renaming streets as it might entail problems. In his words, very compelling reasons are needed for that.
He also said that many suggestions have come on the matter, including from people living on this street, who insist the current name in honor of Carl Christopher Gjorwell Sr., librarian and journalist, and Carl Christopher Gjorwell Jr., architect, be preserved.
"We don’t think it is right to name streets after a living person such as Zelensy. We don’t do it in Stockholm," he stressed.
He suggested parts of the nearby park, Mariebergsparken, be renamed to, for instance, Freedom of Speech Square, Solidarity Square, or Free Ukraine.
