Vandals topple Pushkin monument in western Ukraine

Vandals have demolished a monument to famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin in Zlochev, in western Ukraine’s Lvov region

KIEV, July 2. /TASS/. Vandals have demolished a monument to famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin in Zlochev, in western Ukraine’s Lvov region, Mayor Igor Grinkiv said on Monday.

"The act of vandalism. In Zlochev vandals have destroyed a monument to Pushkin," the city mayor wrote on Facebook, stressing that the accident is "not related to politics."

Local lawmakers had earlier discussed renaming Pushkin Square to Heroes Memory Square and planned to put this question up for a public discussion, Grinkiv said. The lawmakers had also put forward an initiative on renaming Pushkin Street, but gave up the idea due to the public protest.

The Pushkin bust in Zlochev was erected in 1957.

This winter, another Pushkin monument was attacked by vandals in Chernigov, in northern Ukraine. Unknown individuals stole the bust, which was erected in September 1900.
