Scientists say Russia can reach 60% or higher COVID-19 herd immunity by New Year’s

Vladimir Chulanov noted that much depends on the regions and their inoculation programs

NALCHIK, September 17. /TASS/. Herd Immunity against coronavirus can reach and exceed 60% by late 2021 - early 2022 with a high vaccination rate, chief non-resident expert on infectious diseases of the Russian Health Ministry Vladimir Chulanov told TASS on Friday.

"We believe that we can achieve 60% herd immunity and above for Russia as a whole by late 2021 — early 2022, taking into account vaccination rates," the expert said.

He noted that much depends on the regions and their inoculation programs. "Of course, the North Caucasian Federal District should catch up. Unfortunately, the total number of COVID-19 vaccination figures there are significantly lower than in other constituent territories," the expert added.

Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko stated on Tuesday that more than 46 million people had already received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
