Consular department of Russia’s embassy in US to lose almost half of staff soon — diplomat

WASHINGTON, December 14. /TASS/. The number of employees at the consular department of the Russian Embassy in the United States will soon almost halve due to demands of the American side, Nadezhda Shumova, head of the embassy’s consular department, told TASS.

Summing up the results of 2023 and commenting on prospects for the embassy’s future operations, the diplomat said: "In 2024, [Russia’s] consular operations in the United States will worsen further, as the consular department will lose 40% of its staff in the next 10 days." This would make it harder for the department to be fully operational, she said, citing US term limits for Russian diplomats.

"However, we will undoubtedly make every effort to address the problems of Russian nationals in terms of consular and legal assistance," Shumova emphasized.
