Kiev needs attacks on Sevastopol to mask frontline failures — Russian senator

Yekaterina Altabayeva said that Sevastopol was under the reliable protection of the Black Sea Fleet and air defense systems and life in the city was calm and peaceful

SEVASTOPOL, January 16. /TASS/. Attacks on Sevastopol with drones are necessary for Kiev to save face with their foreign partners as well as their own citizens after failures on the frontline, Yekaterina Altabayeva, a member of Russia’s Federation Council from Sevastopol, told TASS on Monday.

Earlier in the day, air defense forces and the Black Sea Fleet shot down eight Ukrainian military drones in the waters of Sevastopol. Governor Mikhail Razvozhayev said none of the local facilities were damaged as a result of the attack. The airspace remains under control and emergency services stay on guard.

"This is an attempt to distract attention in the information space from the success of Russian troops on the line of engagement. It was also an attempt to persuade their citizens - if there are people who still believe this regime - and most importantly, to their foreign patrons, primarily the Americans, that they are capable of something. The way I see it, they are desperate to show some results," said Altabayeva. "Attacks on the federal city of Sevastopol - the base of the Black Sea Fleet - was a fruitless attempt to demonstrate military successes."

Altabayeva said that Sevastopol was under the reliable protection of the Black Sea Fleet and air defense systems and life in the city was calm and peaceful: "No facilities inside the city or around it were damaged. This testifies to the highest professionalism of our defenders."

Sevastopol is the main base of the Black Sea Fleet. In recent months there have been several attempts to attack it with drones. One of the most recent drone attacks was carried out on January 7.
