Russian senator favors taking population size into account in UN General Assembly voting

Konstantin Kosachev noted that when discussing UN reform, the ‘one country, one vote’ principle should be preserved for the Security Council but other UN bodies, namely the General Assembly, could adopt alternative voting models

MOSCOW, November 21. /TASS/. The population size of countries should be taken into account in United Nations General Assembly voting process, Russian Federation Council (the upper house of parliament) Deputy Speaker Konstantin Kosachev said in an interview with the aif.ru media outlet published on Monday.

"I believe that it may be revised sooner or later and the UN General Assembly’s votes, for instance, will take the demographic factor into account. Look at how the European Parliament votes. The number of lawmakers representing a country depends on its population size," Kosachev pointed out.

The senior Russian senator noted that when discussing UN reform, the ‘one country, one vote’ principle should be preserved for the Security Council but other UN bodies, namely the General Assembly, could adopt alternative voting models.
