Russia’s UN envoy slams West for not caring about Afghan people

"The future of common Afghan people, who are deprived of the basic means of survival, is the last thing that these countries care about," Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said

UNITED NATIONS, November 11. /TASS/. Western countries aren’t ready to seriously discuss the unfreezing the Afghan assets without trying to use the issue as a tool to put pressure on the country’s authorities, Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said, addressing a UN General Assembly meeting on Thursday.

"The need to resolve the issue of unfreezing the Afghan assets is being ignored amid the deteriorating humanitarian and economic situation in Afghanistan, while the assets are needed for the country’s economic recovery and its future development," he pointed out. "We can see that Western donors aren’t ready to seriously discuss the matter without trying to use the financial issue as a tool to put pressure on the actual authorities," Nebenzya added.

"At the same time, it is clear that the future of common Afghan people, who are deprived of the basic means of survival, is the last thing that these countries care about," the Russian envoy stressed.

"We are disappointed by some Western colleagues’ clear unwillingness to even mention the role of regional organizations, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the Collective Security Treaty Organization and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, as well as to take into account the proposals of regional nations that are aimed at facilitating the country’s social and economic recovery and future development," Nebenzya said.
