Xi’s re-election seen in Russia as sign of stability — Russian senator

According to the senator, commitment to this cooperation was fixed in a joint statement signed by the Russian and Chinese leaders in Moscow in May 2015, where they spoke about linking Moscow’s Eurasian integration project and Beijing’s One Belt, One Road project

MOSCOW, October 23. /TASS/. China’s current course is toward serious cooperation with Russia and Xi Jinping’s re-election as secretary general of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China means stability for Russia, a senior Russian lawmaker said on Sunday.

"For us, it is a serious sign of stability because China’s course is toward serious cooperation with Russia," Andrey Klimov, deputy chairman of the international committee of Russia’s Federation Council (upper parliament house) and deputy chairman of the ruling United Russia party’s commission on international cooperation and support for compatriots abroad, told TASS.

According to the senator, commitment to this cooperation was fixed in a joint statement signed by the Russian and Chinese leaders in Moscow in May 2015, where they spoke about linking Moscow’s Eurasian integration project and Beijing’s One Belt, One Road project.

The personnel policy endorsed by the 20th congress of the Chinese Communist Party and the resolution of its Central Committee "has largely strengthened Xi Jinping’s organizational, political and personnel possibilities" and he will be able to pursue the course announced ahead of the congress in the next five years. He noted that along with serious domestic problems, there are foreign policy matters. "The United States understands that it will have to plunge into a serious financial-and-economic and trade standoff with China, and Washington is ready to tap very serious resources for that. To withstand America’s aggressive neocolonial policy, China will have to take a number of serious steps. These steps were outlined in Xi Jinping’s report," Klimov said.

He noted that this congress was quite unique, since none of China’s Communist Party leaders have stayed in office for more than two terms since Mao Zedong’s era. "The incumbent leader did not try to hide that his plans are spanning more than ten years. And such an approach amid the current international global turbulence looks very reasonable. It is very important at such a sharp turn in the history of humankind that the continuity stays in place at the level of the top official, first of all for those countries that don’t want any chaos. And Russia is among such states," he said.

He also noted that United Russia has very close ties with China’s Communist Party, saying that all inter-party agreements, including those reached at meetings attended by the Chinese leader, "were strategically important and are meant for a very long period."

"And the fact that he continues to be at the helm of huge China is a guarantee that these agreements will only be strengthening and developing," he said. "It is very important for us, because stable, developing and friendly China, our neighbor, creates necessary conditions for ensuring Russia’s security and our socio-economic development."

The Central Committee of China’s Communist Party on Sunday re-elected Xi Jinping as secretary general for his third five-year term. The vote took place at the first plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to retain his posts as the head of state and chairman of the Central Military Commission.
