German authorities set course for rejecting special relationship with Moscow, says envoy

"Working contacts, including through international political agencies, persist, though, their level, number and content are far more modest than it used to be," Sergey Nechayev noted

BERLIN, October 18. /TASS/. The dialogue between the authorities of Russia and Germany has not been fully interrupted, with working contacts through the Foreign Ministry persisting, for example, though overall, Berlin has set a course for rejecting a special relationship between the two states and their peoples, Russian Ambassador to the country Sergey Nechayev said in an interview with TASS.

"Despite the difficulties, the dialogue has not been fully interrupted," he said, adding that Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz "communicate with each other occasionally." Particularly, the latest telephone conversation between them was held on September 13.

"Working contacts, including through international political agencies, also persist, though, their level, number and content are far more modest than it used to be," the diplomat noted, adding that the German side had frozen most traditional cooperation formats.

"In fact, the German authorities have set a course for rejecting a special relationship between the countries and peoples, which were meticulously established by previous generations, connecting us even during the hardest times," he stressed. "By the way, it is what made the Germans special compared with the collective West, enabling Berlin to act as a mediator, which knows and understands Russia and its interests more than others. Today Germany no longer has this role, or it has abandoned it, to be precise," Nechayev concluded.
