Idea of secret ballot on UNGA resolution doesn’t sit well with US, says Lavrov

It is stated that when it’s crucial for the Americans to demonstrate vast support for Ukraine, they seek to make sure that after receiving threats and facing blackmail, all the delegates raise their hands publicly so that the Americans can see everyone’s reaction

MOSCOW, October 11. /TASS/. Moscow suggested that the United Nations General Assembly hold a secret ballot on a resolution concerning the recent referendums but the idea does not sit well with the US, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.

"We suggested that before adopting a resolution condemning the outcome of the referendums, the General Assembly - in full compliance with its procedures - should hold a secret ballot on the resolution instead of an open vote," he told Rossiya-1’s 60 Minute show on Tuesday.

"Clearly, when it’s crucial for the Americans to demonstrate vast support for Ukraine, they seek to make sure that after receiving threats and facing blackmail, all the delegates raise their hands publicly so that the Americans can see everyone’s reaction. On the other hand, a secret ballot, which is a truly democratic procedure, doesn’t sit well with them," Lavrov noted.
