Russia’s UN envoy says US-sponsored resolution on referendums is another step to split UN

A cheap and unprecedented provocation at the UN Security Council was used as an excuse for the resumption of the special session, Vasily Nebenzya said

UNITED NATIONS, October 10. /TASS/. Russia’s UN envoy Vasily Nebenzya on Monday said the resolution on the referendums in Donbass and the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, which is proposed by the US and Albania, is another step to split the UN.

"A cheap and unprecedented provocation at the [UN] Security Council was used as an excuse for the resumption of the special session. We were asked to support a document in which we would condemn ourselves," the diplomat said at the session, which is dedicated to the Ukrainian crisis.

"What does support of peace and security or the search for a solution to the conflict have to do with this?" he continued. "This is another step toward division and escalation, which, we are sure, isn’t something that is needed by the overwhelming majority of the countries, whose representatives are in this hall today."

Russian UN envoy calls on UN General Assembly to respect choice of people of Donbass and Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.

On September 30, the United States and Albania put to the vote of the UN Security Council a resolution condemning the referendums in the Donetsk and Lugansk people's republics, and the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions. Russia vetoed the document. Brazil, China, Gabon and India abstained. According to a Western-sponsored resolution of the UN General Assembly adopted in April, the body will convene for a meeting every time a veto is used in the Security Council by any of its permanent members. The General Assembly must meet within 10 days from the date when a veto was used.
