Cybertechnologies have begun to be used for geopolitical aims — Russia’s ambassador to UN

Vasily Nebenzya stressed the importance of the ICT sector, which keeps vital public administration institutions going

UNITED NATIONS, May 23. /TASS/. The hope that the information and communication technologies (ICT) will become "an unconditional force for good" has turned out to be futile, chiefly because they have been employed in pursuit of geopolitical aims, Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya, said at a meeting of the UN Security Council on peace and security on Monday.

"It will not be an exaggeration to say that humanity today depends on IT and communication technologies far stronger than ever. But the hope that ICT will become an unconditional force for good has failed to materialize. It is not technologies that are to blame for this. They began to be used in pursuit of geopolitical aims and hegemony, and not only in physical terms, but also in cyberspace," he said.

Nebenzya stressed the importance of the ICT sector, which keeps vital public administration institutions going.

"The ICT are crucial to the services that the state provides to the population, the operation of hospitals, banks and the financial sector in general, schools and other critically important institutions," Nebenzya said.
