Dollar's share in SWIFT transfers surpasses 50% in January

The report emphasized that not all international transfers are carried out through SWIFT, which began cutting off Russian banks from its system in 2022

NEW YORK, February 20. /TASS/. The share of dollar payments in the SWIFT financial information exchange system exceeded 50% in January, which is the highest figure since mid-2023, Bloomberg reported with reference to SWIFT data.

The share of the dollar in international transfers via SWIFT in January reached 50.2%, while a month earlier the figure was 49.1%. This is the highest figure for the US currency since mid-2023, when SWIFT changed the transfer accounting system, the agency noted.

According to its data, on average over the past year and a half, the share of the dollar was around 48%. The euro was in second place with 23%, followed by the British pound (7.1%).

The agency emphasized that not all international transfers are carried out through SWIFT, which began cutting off Russian banks from its system in 2022.

The BRICS countries are playing a leading role. According to SWIFT, the share of the Chinese yuan in international transfers is 3.8%, which is twice as high as ten years ago. The South African Rand's share was 0.3% in January. SWIFT does not provide data on Brazilian and Indian national currencies, the agency noted.
