NEW DELHI, February 6. /TASS/. India will receive the fourth battalion set of Russian S-400 air defense systems by the end of the year, the India Today TV channel reported quoting Indian Defense Ministry sources.
Each S-400 battalion set comprises 16 hardware units, including launchers, radars, control centers and support vehicles. The Russian systems play a key role in the defense of Indian strategic facilities, the sources said.
The contract with Russia envisages the delivery of five S-400 sets. The contract worth $5.43 billion was signed during a visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India in October 2018.
S-400 Triumph (SA-21 Growler by NATO classification) is a Russian antiaircraft medium and long-range missile system to destroy modern and perspective aerospace attack means in conditions of intensive electronic warfare. It can destroy aerodynamic targets at a distance up to 400 km and tactical ballistic targets with a speed of 4.8 km/s (cruise missiles, tactical and strategic aircraft) at a distance of up to 60 km. The radar detects air targets at a distance of 600 km. Guided antiaircraft missiles 48N6E3 can hit aerodynamic targets at altitudes from 10 to 27 thousand meters and ballistic targets - from 2 to 25 thousand meters.
