KALININGRAD, December 24. /TASS/. The diesel-electric submarine Velikiye Luki dived to a depth of 100 meters as part of official tests in the Baltic Fleet's trial areas, the fleet said in a statement.

"When submerged, the crew of the Velikiye Luki and industry representatives checked the operation of all systems and mechanisms of the submarine, practiced the algorithms of actions for operating the vessel at a depth and various methods of surfacing," the statement said.

Upon completion of the underwater part of the test, the crew of the Velikiye Luki took the submarine to the surface and continued to carry out operations in accordance with the plan, according to the statement.

"When the submarine submerged, it was supported by warships and rescue vessels of the Baltic Fleet," the fleet said.

The Velikiye Luki belongs to Project 677 Lada submarines, part of a fourth-generation series of Russian multipurpose diesel-electric submarines that have been recognized as the most modern and promising domestic non-nuclear submarines, both in terms of combat effectiveness and other tactical and technical characteristics. She is designed for fighting against enemy submarines and ships, defense of naval bases, coastal and sea communications and reconnaissance and patrol activities on enemy communications. The surface displacement is about 1,750 tons. She can dive to a depth of over 300 meters and reach a speed of up to 21 knots when submerged. Project 677 Lada submarines are armed with weapons like the Kalibr missile system.
