Joint Command of regional group of Russian, Belarusian forces starts exercising in Belarus

Representatives of the two countries’ military agencies will spend a week training joint planning for the use of forces based on the recent history of armed conflicts

MINSK, January 31. /TASS/. Belarusian and Russian military representatives will begin a joint exercise in Belarus on Tuesday to train decision making in the use of the regional grouping of forces for ensuring military security of the Union State, the republic’s Defense Ministry announced on Tuesday.

"A joint exercise of the Joint Command of the Regional Grouping of Forces will begin at the Belarusian Armed Forces today. Representatives of the two countries’ military agencies will spend a week training joint planning for the use of forces based on the recent history of armed conflicts to train decision making in the use of the regional grouping of forces to ensure military security of the Union State," the Belarusian top brass said in a statement.

According to the Belarusian Defense Ministry, joint measures will be taken to increase the compatibility of the two countries’ military command as part of arrangements for the Union Shield 2023 joint military drills to he held in Russia in September.

On October 10, 2022, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko announced the launch of efforts to build a regional grouping of troops, the core of which will consist of Belarusian servicemen. In mid-October, Minsk said the first military trains with Russian troops arrived in the republic.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on December 19, 2022, following talks with Lukashenko in the capital of Belarus, that Moscow and Minsk would continue the practice of holding joint drills and other combat training measures, including as part of the joint grouping of forces. In early January, the Belarusian Defense Ministry said that the two countries continued building up the grouping and that it was ready to perform tasks to protect the Union State’s security.
