PERM, October 15 (Itar-Tass) — Perm Engine Company will make 200 PS-90A-76 engines for the Russian Defence Ministry.
The engines will be manufactured under the contract for the supply of 39 Il-76MD-90A (Il-476) planes for the Defence Ministry, which was signed on October 4 after a demonstration flight of the military transport plane.
The plane will be made by Aviastar-SP in Ulyanovsk, and Perm Engine Company has coordinated the terms of long-term cooperation with the suppliers of units, components and raw materials.
At the same time, many contracts will be implemented to retool Perm Engine Company. Priority will be given to signing an agreement with the United Aircraft Corporation to determine the schedule of engine supply to Aviastar-SP.
“Negotiations on the matter have been on since 2011. I hope they will be completed quite promptly,” Perm Engine Company Managing Director Alexei Mikhalev said on Monday, October 15.
The Il-76MD-90A planee was designed by Ilyushin and made by Aviastar-SP, a subsidiary of the United Aircraft Corporation.
Chief designer Sergei Urasov said earlier that the aircraft was completely new and different from its early version.
The plan is a heavily converted version of the Il-76MD heavy military transport plane. Provided with PS-90A-76 turbofans, the aircraft has new cockpit avionics and features increased speed, range, and cargo capacity of up to 60 tonnes with spacing for a smaller flight crew.
The Il-76MD-90A aircraft is capable of landing on rough strips and is in use with many air forces worldwide for conducting a wide range of missions such as air landing and dropping of personnel, military equipment and different goods. It can also be used for fighting forest fires.
The PS-90A-76 engine is a modification of the PS-90A turbofan. It extends service life of the large fleet of the IL-76 transport airplanes and raises their efficiency by installation of the PS-90A-76 engine instead of the D-30KP. It allowed for building a new modification of the IL-76 airplane - the IL-76MF military freight aircraft which meets modern requirements.
It is a high-bypass-ratio, two-shaft turbofan, with mixed flow and a thrust reverser in a fan duct and noise absorbing system. The aero engine is intended to power IL-76 cargo aircraft and its modifications. The engine was certified in 2003.
In 2004 Perm Engine Company launched the serial production of the engine. PS-90A-76 engines are currently used by three airlines.
Perm Engine Company produces more than 10 types of gas turbine plants with the rated power ranging from 2.5 to 25 MW.
Since 2008 a new era has been opened in the company’s history after the Russian government had consolidated the assets of the key strategic enterprises. Perm Engine Company was incorporated into the United Engine Building Corporation, a 100 percent specialised subsidiary of OBORONPROM for engine building companies assets management.
The long-term experience of large batch production and modernisation of D-30 and PS-90A engines let the company move to mastering the 5th generation engine - PD-14 for MS-21 aircraft.
