BRUSSELS, September 16. /TASS/. The European Parliament will hold a debate and vote on two separate motions of no confidence against European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during its October 6-9 plenary session, Politico reported, citing an email from EP President Roberta Metsola.
According to sources, the joint debate on both motions is expected on October 6, with the votes to be held separately on October 9. Politico noted that the simultaneous submission of two no-confidence motions against a Commission president is unprecedented. Factions from opposite ends of the political spectrum launched the process almost simultaneously, just before von der Leyen was scheduled to deliver her State of the Union address on September 10. Sources said the right-wing Patriots for Europe faction managed to file its motion just 20 seconds before the Left group, meaning its proposal may be voted on first.
This marks the second no-confidence vote von der Leyen has faced this year. On July 10, during a European Parliament session in Strasbourg, a motion was tabled over allegations of corruption in the procurement of COVID-19 vaccines — the first such vote in 25 years. Initiated by Romanian MEP Gheorghe Piperea, the motion was rejected: of 553 MEPs voting, 360 opposed, 175 supported, and 18 abstained.
