Tariff wars undermine global economic order, China’s Xi says

According to Xi Jinping, China is ready to protect the world order based on the principles of the United Nations and international law jointly with Azerbaijan, as well as to defend its own legitimate interests and advocate for international justice

BEIJING, April 23. /TASS/. Trade conflicts undermine the multilateral trade system and the global economy, Chinese leader Xi Jinping said at a meeting in Beijing with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

"Trade and tariff wars harm the legal rights and interests of all countries by undermining the multilateral trade system and destabilizing the global economic order," Xinhua news agency quoted Xi as saying.

According to Xi, China is ready to protect the world order based on the principles of the United Nations and international law jointly with Azerbaijan, as well as to defend its own legitimate interests and advocate for international justice.

On April 2, US President Donald Trump announced tariffs on products from 185 countries and territories, with Russia absent from the list. A universal 10% tariff came into effect on April 5, and individual tariffs were enacted on April 9. On that day, Trump authorized a 90-day pause on additional reciprocal import tariffs for a number of countries and territories and a lowered universal tariff of 10% during this period. The White House said the pause was for holding trade talks.

Meanwhile, the US has imposed taxes of up to 145% on imports from China. In response, China raised its tariff on US imports to 125%.
