MADRID, April 22. /TASS/. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has promised to increase the size of the country's military as part of a new defense and security plan.
He said some funding will be used to improve working conditions and equipment of the military. "We are going to increase the size of the Armed Forces staff, upgrade their equipment, as I said, and modernize their training systems," the prime minister explained.
Spain abolished compulsory military service in 2001. According to newspaper La Razyn, the size of the country’s armed forces stands at 140,000 troops compared to a population of 49 million.
Sanchez presented a plan aimed at bringing the country's defense spending to 2% of GDP this year. Initially, the target was supposed to be reached by 2029.
