Trump wants Ukraine to surrender — Spanish newspaper

According to the newspaper, the meeting of Western leaders in Kiev on February 24 exposed the divide that exists between countries supporting Ukraine and the United States after Donald Trump’s return to the White House

MADRID, February 25. /TASS/. US President Donald Trump allegedly wants Ukraine to simply surrender while Europe would like to see the conflict settled, Spain’s El Pais writes.

"The voice of Western democracies must be consolidated in Kiev, in the United Nations, in the White House," it said in an editorial. "Europe wants peace in Ukraine while Trump wants it to surrender."

According to the newspaper, the meeting of Western leaders in Kiev on February 24 exposed the divide that exists between countries supporting Ukraine and the United States after Donald Trump’s return to the White House. The participating leaders sent an unambiguous signal to Ukraine, promising continued support, it said.

It noted, however, that no senior US officials were present, an indication of the new US administration’s stark shift on Ukraine, as they not only question the expediency of further military assistance to Kiev but also demand the latter repay what it calls debts to the US. Thus, the newspaper wrote, Washington has built a wall of distrust between itself and its allies with its about-face on Ukraine.
