Top Chinese diplomat, Brazilian envoy agree to promote dialogue on Ukraine

According to the top Chinese diplomat, China and Brazil’s six-point conflict settlement initiative and the ‘friends of peace’ group formed with their participation are geared toward pooling the efforts by the global South countries

BEIJING, January 23. /TASS/. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Brazilian president’s special envoy Celso Amorim have agreed to consolidate efforts to promote dialogue on a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian crisis, the Chinese foreign ministry said after their phone call.

"The crisis in Ukraine has been lasting for nearly three years. The consensus among all the parties calling for a ceasefire and political settlement, is consolidating and expanding," the ministry quoted Wang as saying.

According to the top Chinese diplomat, China and Brazil’s six-point conflict settlement initiative and the ‘friends of peace’ group formed with their participation are geared toward pooling the efforts by the global South countries, creating an atmosphere and conditions for peace talks.

Such mutual understanding has a great significance, Amorim noted, adding that it is necessary to use this favorable possibility.

After the consultations between Wang Yi and Celso Amorim in May, 2024, the sides adopted a six-point joint statement. According to the document, dialogue and talks are the only way to settle the Ukrainian crisis. China and Brazil proposed to organize an international peace conference with equal participation of all sides to discuss all pace plans.
