PARIS, February 27. /TASS/. Sending troops to Ukraine would make Paris a party to the conflict, Jean-Luc Melenchon, the founder of the left-wing party France Unbowed, said, calling the prospect of France going to war with Russia insane.
"Sending troops to Ukraine would make us a party to the conflict. A war against Russia would be madness. Such bellicose verbal escalation by one nuclear power against another major nuclear power is an irresponsible act," Melanchon wrote on his X page.
Florian Philippot, leader of the French Patriots party, also considers talk of sending Western troops to Ukraine to be crazy. "Absolute madness," he noted on his X page. "It would obviously be a war with Russia, a third world war." According to Philippot, such decisions cannot be made without the approval of the French parliament.
The politician also demanded France's withdrawal from NATO and a peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian conflict.
Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron said at a news conference after a meeting with a number of heads of state and government devoted to helping Kiev that the possibility of sending troops from Western countries had been discussed at the meeting, but no consensus on this issue had been reached. He also noted that nothing can be ruled out going forward.
