Israeli warplanes attack Hezbollah air defenses in Lebanon to retaliate for downed drone

"The Israel Defense Forces will continue to act to protect the State of Israel from the threat posed by the terrorist organization Hezbollah, including conducting air operations over Lebanese territory," the IDF noted

TEL AVIV, February 26. /TASS/. The Israel Defense Forces said its warplanes struck Hezbollah air defenses in Lebanon’s Beqaa Valley in retaliation for the downing of an Israeli military drone earlier in the day.

"IDF warplanes a short time ago attacked sites in Beqaa that were used by the air defense system of Hezbollah. This is in response to the launch of surface-to-air missiles at an IDF’s remotely piloted aircraft Hermes-450, which fell earlier today," the IDF said in a statement.

"The Israel Defense Forces will continue to act to protect the State of Israel from the threat posed by the terrorist organization Hezbollah, including conducting air operations over Lebanese territory," the IDF added.

Earlier, the Israeli army said it delivered airstrikes "deep inside Lebanese territory." The Ynet news website reported that the strikes targeted three Hezbollah facilities near the town of Baalbek in the Beqaa Valley. According to Ynet, this was the "largest IDF attack on Lebanese territory" since the beginning of the current round of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the first attack on this area of Lebanon since Israel started its military operation against Palestinian radicals in the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023.

Shortly before the reports of strikes on Lebanon's outlying areas, the Israeli military said it had lost one of its drones operating over Lebanon. According to the military, the aerial vehicle was hit by a missile and fell inside Lebanon.
