CAIRO, December 18. /TASS/. Egypt’s incumbent head of state Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has been re-elected as president for another six years, according to the official results of the December 10-12 vote announced by the National Elections Authority (NEA).
A total of 89.6% of voters taking part in the election in the country and abroad supported El-Sisi, NEA President Hazem Badawi said at a press conference broadcast on the Al-Qahira Al-Ihbariya TV channel.
"Voter turnout in the presidential election was the highest in history, reaching 66.8%," Badawi pointed out.
The NEA chief also said that the other three presidential contenders had received between 1.9% and 4.5% of the vote.
El-Sisi took charge of the country in 2014, securing 96.91% of the vote in that year's presidential election. In April 2019, Egypt approved amendments extending the presidential term from four to six years and keeping the rule in place that the president can only be re-elected once. However, "a transitional provision" was introduced that made it possible for El-Sisi to remain in power for another two years, until 2024, and seek re-election for a third term.
