Yerevan, Baku in talks on troops’ withdrawal from state border; no decision yet — minister

"We believe that the troops’ withdrawal will have a positive effect and will help to prevent any further escalation," Armenia’s top diplomat said

YEREVAN, December 13. /TASS/. Armenia and Azerbaijan are holding talks about the troops’ pullout from the state border area, but no decision has been made as of yet, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said on Wednesday.

"An issue of troops’ withdrawal from the Armenian-Azerbaijani state border has been discussed and, I hope, it will continue to be discussed," Armenia’s top diplomat said. "We believe that the troops’ withdrawal will have a positive effect and will help to prevent any further escalation."

"I cannot say that we have reached a final agreement, but this initiative is being discussed at the moment," Mirzoyan added.

On December 7, the Armenian Prime Minister's Office and the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration issued a joint statement, saying that Yerevan and Baku reaffirmed their intention to settle relations and conclude a peace treaty based on respect for the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Azerbaijan released 32 Armenian servicemen as a sign of goodwill, while Armenia released two Azerbaijani servicemen.
