Nepal cracking down on social media in country

According to the new regulations, a number of social networks have to open representative offices in Nepal and register at the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology

NEW DELHI, November 10. /TASS/. The Cabinet of Ministers of Nepal has passed "The Directives on the Operation of Social Networking," which introduces new rules and regulations regarding social media platforms in the country, The Kathmandu Post newspaper reported.

According to the new restrictions, such social networks as Facebook (banned in Russia, owned by Meta, a corporation recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation), X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, YouTube and others have to open representative offices in Nepal and register at the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology. They have three months to do so. Otherwise, the social network will be blocked.

This measure by the Nepalese government is connected with the growing number of complaints from citizens, who have nowhere to address their appeals in the absence of company representative offices.

The directive includes a list of 19 things users of popular social networks are forbidden from doing. In particular, the creation of fake accounts and the posting of content that promotes hate against any gender, community, caste, religion, profession or people from any particular group are prohibited.

The new regulations also establish a ban on the spreading of data on child labor, human trafficking, underage or polygamous marriages, prostitution, drug dealing and terrorism. It is prohibited to falsify images, publish private pictures without authorization as well as spread fake news and distorted information.
