Thousands of Germans rally for peace settlement in Ukraine during Easter demonstrations

The participants called on German authorities to immediately begin peace talks to end the conflict in Ukraine

BERLIN, April 10. /TASS/. Thousands of people across Germany took place in traditional Easter marches for peace, which this year took place under the mark of the conflict in Ukraine. According to the Peace Cooperation Network, which coordinates the rallies, over 120 marches took place across the country.

According to the organizers, about 2,000 people took to the streets in Frankfurt am Main alone. Overall, the marches involved "tens of thousands of people," the association said. The participants called on German authorities to immediately begin peace talks to end the conflict in Ukraine, to stop shipments of German weapons to Kiev and to reject the planned reinforcement of the Bundeswehr. A separate rally took place near the settlement of Buchel, where, according to unconfirmed information, 20 US nuclear warheads are deployed.

"The participants of the Easter marches sent a clear signal to the federal government. It must begin to act at last: it is necessary to begin peace talks for Ukraine," the association underscored.

Easter marches started in the UK in the 1950s as a protest against nuclear proliferation amid the Cold War. First such rallies took place in Germany in the 1960s. In different periods, the Germans protested against wars in Vietnam and the Persian Gulf, against NATO bombardment of Yugoslavia. After the "iron curtain" fell, the popularity of such marches has decreased significantly, but they become relevant against in the light of the situation in Ukraine.
