Azerbaijan to use int’l mechanisms to probe into attack on embassy in Iran

According to Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov, it was Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s decision to evacuate the embassy staff

BAKU, January 29. /TASS/. Azerbaijan will use international mechanisms to investigate the attack on its embassy in Iran, Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov said on Sunday.

"To investigate such situations between countries, certain steps are usually taken. We plan to use the existing international mechanisms to probe into this crime," he said.

According to the diplomat, it was Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s decision to evacuate the embassy staff. "Naturally, it is not an easy decision to evacuate the diplomatic mission but we have neither hopes nor trust to the Iranian side in what concerns security," he explained.

A plane with the evacuated personnel of the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran landed in Baku on Sunday evening. The Azerbaijani foreign ministry said on January 27 that the country’s embassy in Tehran had come under armed attack, killing a security officer and wounding two more. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev described the incident as a terror attack and demanded a thorough investigation of the incident and "punishment of the terrorists."
