Another group of US lawmakers is set to come to Taiwan — report

A military plane carrying the delegation - the third group of US representatives visiting the island over the past month - is set to land late on Thursday

HONG KONG/XIANGGANG, August 25. /TASS/. Another group of US lawmakers is coming to Taiwan with an unannounced visit on Thursday, Taiwan’s Central News Agency said.

A military plane carrying the delegation - the third group of US representatives visiting the island over the past month - is set to land late on Thursday, according to the report. The lawmakers will be received by Tsai Ing-wen, the head of the Taiwanese administration, on Friday. The report doesn’t specify the names of the group’s members.

The US severed diplomatic relations with Taipei in 1979 and established them with the PRC. Even as it’s committed to the One China policy, Washington continues to maintain contacts with the self-governing island and supplies it with weapons.

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi traveled to Taiwan on August 2-3, which displeased China and prompted Beijing to start military maneuvers around the island. A delegation of US lawmakers visited Taiwan on August 14-15. Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb followed with a visit of his own.

Taiwan has been governed by its local administration since 1949 when the Kuomintang’s remaining forces headed by Chiang Kai-shek (1887-1975) were defeated in the Chinese Civil War and took refuge on the island. Taiwan has preserved the flag and several other symbols of the Republic of China that had existed before the Communists took over the mainland. Beijing regards the island as one of its provinces, a stance supported by most other countries including Russia.
