US deputy secretary of state discusses sanctions on Russia, Belarus with European allies

The participants agreed to continue coordinated efforts to isolate the Russian Federation on the international stage

MOSCOW, March 31. /TASS/. US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman had a telephone conversation with her counterparts from France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom to discuss sanctions against Russia and Belarus targeting their international isolation, US Department of State Spokesperson Ned Price said in a press statement on Wednesday.

According to Price, Sherman spoke with Secretary General of the French Foreign MInistry Francois Delattre, Political Director of the German Foreign Ministry Tjorven Bellmann, Secretary General of the Italian Foreign Ministry Ettore Sequi, and UK Minister of State for Europe and North America James Cleverly.

"The group discussed future measures to hold the Russian Federation and Belarus accountable for this war of choice, and the need for all countries - including the People’s Republic of China - to refrain from providing material support to Russia," the statement reads. "They also discussed the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Ukraine" and the impacts of the conflict on global food security.

"The participants agreed to continue coordinated efforts to isolate the Russian Federation on the international stage," it says. "The Deputy Secretary reiterated the United States’ support for Ukraine’s diplomatic efforts to reach a ceasefire."

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation in response to a request for help by the heads of the Donbass republics. He stressed that Moscow had no plans of occupying Ukrainian territories, but aimed to demilitarize and denazify the country.

Following this step, the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom and several other countries announced sanctions against Russia individuals and legal entities.
