MOSCOW, July 4. /TASS/. King Abdullah II of Jordan believes that relations with Russia are developing smoothly and contribute to peace in the Middle East, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said at a meeting with Russia’s top diplomat Sergey Lavrov on Wednesday.
"I would like to convey warm greetings to Russian President Vladimir Putin from Jordan’s king. The king notes that our relations are developing smoothly, they are based, first and foremost, on sincerity, friendship and openness," the Jordanian minister noted. "Our bilateral relations contribute not only to promoting our interests. They also serve the cause of establishing peace in the region."
He expressed the hope that the negotiations will be constructive. "I mean, in particular, our talks and the discussion of the situation in southern Syria," he explained.
According to Safadi, the situation there "requires a political settlement and an understanding that it is necessary to save civilian lives." "I hope that today we will be able to outline some specific steps to resolve the situation in southern Syria," he went on to say. "The situation in southern Syria is very complex. We want to find a solution to the problems that have accumulated there and put an end to people’s suffering. This is a very important area."
"Naturally, we will discuss the situation around the Middle East settlement," he added. "For us, this is a crucial issue, and we pay special attention to it. We appreciate very much a special role played by Russia in establishing peace in that region. Today I will also brief you on the efforts and steps made by King Abdullah II in that respect."
The minister congratulated Russia on the successful organization of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. "Competitions are held in a very friendly and warm atmosphere," he stressed. "I would also like to congratulate you on the Russian team’s success during this tournament.".
